How to become a vet tech in Oklahoma

Last checked October 25, 2026 against the sources listed below. Information, not legal advice: confirm with the board before you apply or take on a task.

Oklahoma vet techs hold the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) credential, a state certification issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The law protects the title and says no one may act as a vet tech without Board certification, but it also lets veterinarians employ assistants and delegate care matched to their training. To register, you graduate from an AVMA-accredited vet tech program, pass the VTNE and pass the board's online Oklahoma state exam on the Practice Act.

How to get your RVT in Oklahoma

  1. Graduate from a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and approved by the board. The board approves programs that meet AVMA standards.
  2. Send the board the Registered Veterinary Technician Application by its deadline. For 2026 the board listed February 1, April 16, June 20 and November 15. The application must be notarized, carry a photo, account for all your education and work since high school, and be signed before a notary to verify that you are lawfully present in the United States. Any "yes" answer on the criminal, discipline or substance questions must be explained in detail in a sworn statement.
  3. Add the supporting documents: a Verification of Education form showing you graduated from an approved program, a copy of your diploma and transcripts, two recommendations from RVTs or licensed veterinarians (or a section completed by an officer of your state professional association, if you are a member), and a verification for every vet tech registration you hold or held in another state.
  4. Register for the VTNE with the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). If you already took it in another state, ask AAVSB to send all your scores, passing and failing, to the Oklahoma board.
  5. Take the Oklahoma State Veterinary Technician Exam. It is an online, remote exam on the Oklahoma Veterinary Practice Act, given at 9:00 am Central on the Tuesday before each board meeting. The board's packet says you must pass both exams before registration is issued and lists a passing score of 70 or above. AAVSB scores the VTNE and reports your score to the board.
  6. Pay the fees. As listed by the board as of October 2026, the board fee is $130 for the VTNE and state exam together, $50 for the VTNE only, or $130 for the state exam only. AAVSB charges its own VTNE fee on top. The board then reviews your application and scores at a board meeting.

What a credentialed tech can do, and what an assistant can do

Oklahoma lists 17 procedures that an RVT may do on a veterinarian's order without the veterinarian's continuing physical presence (rule 775:10-7-9.1). The rule calls this general supervision. Other tech work is under "direct supervision," which Oklahoma defines as directions given after the veterinarian has examined the animal. The rules do not list tasks for assistants one by one. The law says an assistant "may perform the duties of a veterinary technician" and lets veterinarians delegate care matched to training. But a veterinarian may not let anyone do RVT services without direct supervision without first confirming that the person is a registered RVT (rule 775:10-5-30(18)).

An RVT may also give life-saving treatment in an emergency.

Veterinary assistants in Oklahoma

No state permit or registration for veterinary assistants was found in the Practice Act, rules or board forms. The Practice Act defines an assistant as someone who may perform vet tech duties but has not graduated from an AVMA-accredited program and is not certified by the board. It also says the law does not require a veterinarian to hire an RVT or stop one from employing assistants. Assistants may not use a title or words that suggest they are a registered veterinary technician; the board has cited an unregistered person for advertising as a "technician." A separate Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician credential exists for employees of board-approved shelters, animal control agencies and law enforcement who are at least 21.

Renewal and continuing education

RVT registration is renewed every year. As listed by the board as of October 2026, the renewal fee is $45, due by June 30. Online renewal opened April 15 in 2026 and is closed from September to mid-April. Registrations not renewed after August 30 are automatically suspended. You need 10 hours of CE for each July 1 to June 30 year, and 2 of those hours must cover state or federal controlled dangerous substance laws or a review of the Oklahoma Practice Act and rules. The board sets no maximum for RACE-approved online CE, while presentations, self-study and journal reading count for at most 2 hours each. You do not send certificates, but you must keep them for five years for audits. New graduates certified within a year of graduating do not report CE until their second renewal. To reinstate a lapsed registration you need 10 CE hours for each year lapsed, up to 100 hours, plus fees; as listed by the board as of October 2026, the re-registration fee is $50 plus $45 for each year lapsed.

Recent changes

  • Practice Act compilation (2025): the board posted a new compilation of the Practice Act, revised July 1, 2025. Its vet tech sections set out the rules described on this page.

FAQ

Can I work in an Oklahoma clinic without being an RVT?

The law lets veterinarians employ veterinary assistants and delegate care matched to their training. Assistants cannot use the vet tech title, and a veterinarian may not let anyone who is not a registered RVT do RVT services without direct supervision.

I am credentialed in another state. Can I transfer to Oklahoma?

The Practice Act and board packet list no endorsement route for RVTs. You apply like a new RVT: have AAVSB send all your VTNE scores, send verifications from every state where you held a registration, and pass the Oklahoma state exam. Active military members and their spouses who are in good standing with equivalent training are to be registered within 30 days, with the application fee waived.

Can an Oklahoma RVT work without a veterinarian in the building?

For the 17 procedures in rule 775:10-7-9.1, such as vaccinations, dental scaling, imaging and anesthesia, an RVT may work on a veterinarian's order without the veterinarian's continuing physical presence. The RVT must still follow the record-keeping rules, and no RVT may diagnose, prescribe or do surgery.

Can I call myself a veterinary nurse in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma law does not define a "veterinary nurse" title or set up a credential for it; the term appears only in the penalty section. The law lets board-certified techs use registered veterinary technician, veterinary technician, RVT, CVT and VT, and makes it unlawful for anyone else to use words that suggest they are a registered veterinary technician.

How often do Oklahoma RVTs renew?

Every year, by June 30, with 10 CE hours for the July to June year. Registrations not renewed after August 30 are automatically suspended.
