How to become a vet tech in Wyoming
Wyoming does not license, register or certify general veterinary technicians through the state. The Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) title comes from a voluntary private certification run by the Wyoming Veterinary Technician Association (WyVTA). State law does not require the CVT to work in a clinic: employees of a licensed veterinarian may give medication and supporting help under that veterinarian's supervision. For the CVT, WyVTA asks for graduation from an AVMA-accredited program and a passing VTNE score.

What a credentialed tech can do, and what an assistant can do
Wyoming law has no task list for a privately certified CVT. The Wyoming Veterinary Medical Practice Act says only a licensed veterinarian (or a temporary permit holder) may practice veterinary medicine. It then allows any veterinary aide, nurse, laboratory technician, intern or other employee of a licensed veterinarian to give medication or provide auxiliary or supporting assistance under that veterinarian's responsible supervision. The Act does not treat a CVT differently from other employees, and it does not define "responsible supervision" or set immediate, direct or indirect levels.

Veterinary assistants in Wyoming
No Wyoming permit or registration for general veterinary assistants was found. Assistants work under the same employee exemption as everyone else on a clinic team. The Board of Veterinary Medicine does issue two narrow credentials: permits for artificial insemination, embryo transplant and embryo transfer technicians, and certificates for animal euthanasia technicians, who are employed or sponsored by a law enforcement agency. Neither one is a general veterinary technician credential.
Renewal and continuing education
WyVTA's renewal page says members must renew every two years to stay credentialed. To renew, you must be in good standing with WyVTA, have 10 hours of continuing education from the last two years, and pay $45 dues, as listed by WyVTA as of October 2026. You upload your CE documents with the renewal form. WyVTA's pricing page lists the same $45 renewal plan as "valid for one year," so confirm the current term with WyVTA before you pay. Since the CVT is a private credential, these terms are set by WyVTA, not by state law.
Recent changes
In 2025, the Wyoming Legislature's Joint Agriculture, State and Public Lands and Water Resources Committee considered a draft bill, 26LSO-0017, that would have created state licensure for veterinary technicians. The official minutes of its June 10 to 11, 2025 meeting record that a motion to sponsor the draft failed on a roll call vote. A version of the draft was also posted with the committee's August 2025 meeting materials, marked "draft only, not approved for introduction." The Practice Act as published by the Legislature in May 2026 still has no technician license or title protection. WyVTA board members say they are working toward title protection, which is a goal, not current law.
FAQ
Does Wyoming license veterinary technicians?
No. Wyoming has no state license or registration for general veterinary technicians. The CVT is a voluntary private certification from WyVTA.
Do I need a CVT to work in a Wyoming veterinary clinic?
State law does not require it. The Practice Act lets employees of a licensed veterinarian give medication and supporting help under that veterinarian's responsible supervision. An employer may still ask for the CVT.
Does a Wyoming CVT have a broader legal scope than an assistant?
No separate state scope was found. The Practice Act's employee exemption applies the same way to a CVT and to other clinic employees.
Can I transfer my out-of-state technician credential to Wyoming?
There is no state license to transfer. For the private WyVTA certification, you send proof of good standing in your prior state, your AVMA-program diploma, AAVSB proof of a passing VTNE score and $55 dues, as listed by WyVTA as of October 2026.
Is "veterinary technician" a protected title in Wyoming?
No state protection for "veterinary technician," "veterinary technologist" or "veterinary nurse" was found. The Practice Act does bar non-veterinarians from using any title that makes people believe they are qualified to diagnose or treat animals.
